9 II 2024 - European Commission baned bisphenol A (BPA) for food container materialÂ
This EC draft proposes a ban on BPA in food contact materials with a 36-month transition period for varnishes and coatings and professional production equipment; and 18 months for everything else. Currently available information says the restriction will come into force in late 2025 or early 2026.
This draft is published after the last November 2023 European Parliament vote about bisphenol A and after the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued an updated scientific opinion finding that current dietary exposure to BPA is unsafe and lowered the tolerable daily intake (TDI) by a factor of 20’000!
In the past, the bottlers relied on the supply of a bottle producer to complete their bottle pool during the season with  large truckload quantity. The end of PC bottles and the early switch to PET bottles gives to the bottlers the opportunity to expand their product portfolio to the bottle packaging. This means greater added value for their business and a clear opportunity to improve their service performance blowing bottle on demand.
